I think a new rule should come into effect - if somebody accuses someone else of having another username and are found to be wrong, they themselves should be banned for 7 days for being a numpty. They should state on any relevant thread 'Admin - I accuse x of being y' then admin investigates it and bans the offender.

Now, I am not familiar with the moderation tools that come with this board (and I assume they are basic at best) but mods and admin should be able to cross check IP addresses. Some forum software allows for add ons that check for a number of things (IP, cookies, MAC addresses) and will flag up those user with multiple accounts. It really should not be that hard to do so. Oh and a word of advice, banning via IP doesn't really work. There are multiple ways around it plus get it wrong and you end up locking out a large chunk of users. Far better off instilling add ons that make the user experience unbearable (such as pages take ages to load, constant refreshes etc). Failing that, just mute users so they believe their posts appear but only they can actually see them. Soon get bored when they get little response. Trust me, it works and this comes from experience - used to run some massive forums including one that ended up in court / litigation due to sock puppet accounts and libel/defamation. Really not worth the hassle long term. |

I don't know what all the fuss is about- personally I take everything that's posted with a pinch of salt and file under entertainment only. Sometimes there is genuine and valid info, but mostly it's a load of squit! We're not discussing the Brutish Constitution here. I don't care how many user names anyone has, if there's any abuse, Admin will ban that particular name, and presumably ban again if they come back. Luton Outlaws is a good example of a 'free' forum. (Admittedly, most of us are a bit more genteel than your average Hatter)
