Introduction

As some people – notably ‘outsiders’ – appear to be having considerable trouble grasping some of the finer details of this forum and its rules,I have a friend of mine has produced an easy to digest guide which hopefully will put a few things straight.
Firstly, the definition of WHOOSHING. A whoosh is issued when somebody has made a remark – usually with a subtle, humorous slant to it – which somebody else subsequently fails to pick up on (hence, “whoosh” is the sound made by the remark as it flies clean over the responder’s head).
Secondly, the definition of FISHING. This is the use of a post that is worded in an inflammatory way so as to try and elicit a reponse from a particular demographic, often weak-minded, gullible fools without the moral fortitude and good sense to let it go. If they respond, they are said to have CHOMPED, and end up IN THE KEEPNET.
Whooshing and fishing are intrinsically linked, and techniques relating to them are often used in tandem. For example, WHOOSHBAIT is a remark deliberately worded to try and elicit a response to which a whoosh could be issued. Certain forum users are in the habit of posting whooshbait in the form of deliberate falsities masquerading as FACT. This is a largely unimaginative and unsubtle approach to which the majority of BB users are now immune, but it continues to produce results from other, less savvy quarters.
It is possible to fight fire with fire, and counter a whoosh in kind; this is known as the REVERSE WHOOSH. However, this requires considerable imagination and refinement, and is a risky technique open to abuse, as it may be wrongly used as justification for chomping after the event. It may even be an urban myth. Similarly, it is all too easy to claim that somebody has chomped merely by dint of having responded to a post. A chomp should only really be considered valid if the source material can be shown to have been sufficiently and deliberately provocative.
Some boards employ a WHOOSH CZAR (or WHOOSHMEISTER). This person will be called upon from time to time to use the WHOOSHOMETER in order to pass judgement on disputes over claims and counter-claims of whooshing, reverse whooshing, and the occasional chomp. This board has one, and rumour has it that he is perplexed at the constantly rabid, pig-ignorant and stultifyingly ill-informed approach of some of this forum's users towards these once-great techniques. Henceforth, he hopes to see a "less is more" attitude adopted, in order that their gratuitous abuse should become less prevalent.
