John Charles was a pleasure to watch and quite rightly thrived upon Scarrots crosses. Even then you neededwide players to create chances. Hope our present two return quickly from injury.

Unlike the days in which Ray Daniel played as a solitary centre-half (number 5) aided by two half-backs (4 & 6) and two full-backs (2 & 3). Didn't get six in every game then but the football was usually very entertaining. Oh for the days when former international players 'dropped down the leagues' to earn a crust before leaving the game. McCall, McIntosh, Vale and Timms fairly regularly. Daniel was a great player. Played up front when he felt like it, too. Edwin Holliday...... Bill Perry.....

Folk forget that Scarrott was a target for the boo boys of the day until he won them over. Brian Punter and Alan Rodgerson had trodden the same path before him. Boo boys seem to be a thing of the past thank goodness, but I’m not on the Meadow End anymore to confirm that.

Two more recent examples: Tommy O'Sullivan used to cop a load from some sections of the crowd. A chap on the Len Weston terrace was also quick to have a moan about Rob Purdie.

Yes, and, slightly different, but at the same time Big John was playing and managing Hereford, Ivor Allchurch, "the golden boy" of Welsh football was playing for Worcester City.

Just googled that. 1994. Wiki reckons £200k for the original transfer to QPR and then £240k for the sell on. Not bad for a freebie.

Does anyone want to lay claim to being stood watching Hereford and thinking/stating "he is going all the way that boy"?
Same goes for Sheedy, interested to know if he stood out as a potential top flight player.

I thought it was at least £400k upfront. Oh well, I suppose it doesn't matter now!

Or there are the missed ones. Obviously Jarrod Bowen is the stand out example but I seem to remember Tyrone Mings was at Cirencester and Martin Foyle saying he was offered to us at £15k but of course the cash wasn’t there. Yes Sheedy stood out a mile when he got a starting place at the back end of the Division 2 season and was part of the late good run. He was with us all the following season but it was a surprise Liverpool of that era came in for him and I suppose even more of a surprise when they let him go and he was such a success at Everton. I guess Liverpool were looking at a successor to Steve Heighway and Ray Kennedy seemed to fill that left sided spot.

Both of us. He turned out a millionaire premier league player, I got a beer belly and can't remember anything about him 😃.

Went on trial to Blackpool who turned him down as he was considered too small and lightweight. Certainly proved them too quick to bin him!

But he was undoubtedly a good player. Although like you, I struggle to remember much as in pick out individual moments - where as I can still picture Chris Price running down the wing now!

I can still see Joe Laidlaw too. Stood waiting on the edge of the area for the occasional morsel of opportunity.
