Interesting one indeed, and I'm conflicted.
On the one hand, freedom of expression is a bedrock of democracy, and of course, always should be. On the other, the image of your diehard DM reader desperately searching for even a hint of xenophobic sensationalism in the Virgin Trains safety brochure is a beautiful thing.

Virgin Trains will no longer sell the DM on their franchise. They don't feel that the DM has reported fairly on matters concerning them.
It's a corporate version of the hugely commendable decision by Merseyside newsagents to boycott the equally vile Murdoch Red-Top.

I think the decision currently applies only to the West Coast Main Line. It isn't a "company wide" policy. Yet As a former resident of North-West England and at the time a frequent traveller on that busy route to London, there always was a heavy Merseyside influence within the then BR operation. Half the workforce at what was, in those days, Crewe Locomotive Works/Motive Power Depot, originated in Liverpool, among them my next door neighbour. He ran a Lada car. It all adds up, doesn't it? 😎

Not what I read - if you are being serious.
I understood that the cause was the Mail's editorial position on issues such as immigration, LGBT rights and unemployment.

You are correct so far as I know..
And to your list you could probably add anything else remotely right of centre on any and all topics.

Don't Virgin trains think their customers can decide for themselves? I can't stand the Daily Mail but they have to right to print what they want as long as it is within the confines of the law.

Anyone want to add some context to this thread? Would have been more fun to leave it to the imagination. Also, will they be replacing the DM with The Sun for their trains into Scousepool?

Don't they also think that any company has a right to decide what products they will, or in this case, won't sell? II don't get why people think they can dictate what products are on offer in a particular shop, which is effectively what this is. Having now read up about it, they sold one copy of the Daily Mail for every four trains. Seems like a common sense business decision. Anyone who wants to read it can buy it at the station, or anywhere else, prior to boarding. I imagine most travellers do that anyway.

They announced it for political reasons to make maximum impact. They could've just stopped selling it without even mentioning it.
I don't think they made a press release when they stopped selling Wotsits.

But why make such a song and dance about it and announce that it's a political decision? To encourage others to follow suit, I imagine.

I wonder what proportion of total sales of daily newspapers takes place on trains. Most of the time I spend on trains I'm too p!ssed to be able to read anything.

Also, they are running a major public service, it can't really be compared to any other business. When they eventually take over the NHS will they start picking and choosing what to show on the hospital televisions based on whether or not they agree with the program's politics?
Also, are they going to start asking the commuters whether they agree with gay marriage before allowing them on the train? Gresty wouldn't get very far!

I believe it was one of the papers offered free in 1st class.

The Daily Mail has every right to print what it likes, just as Virgin has the right to stock whichever papers it likes. There's no need for any 'debate', it's that simple.

I didn't know you could read Well done virgin. Freedom of expression is one thing but when you publish the garbage the Fail prints and you have a disproportionate influence on a sizeable chunk of the population just because you have heaps of dollars (probably made on the backs of some unfortunate individuals) then you can bugger off IMHO. They don't call me 'Singe the Moderate' for nothing.
