I saw The Cramps support The Police at Digbeth Civic Hall in Birmingham in about 1978 and the Cramps lead singer pulled his c*ck out and started playing with it, and my girlfriend at the time tried to insist we move back a bit because we were in the front row and she didn't want to be sp*nked on, but i said no way, if you have to cop a bit just live with it, I'm not missing The Police front row, just cos you're getting a bit twitchy. Anyway the Cramps lead singer never reached any kind of crescendo and neither did his sh*t band. ThePolice were fantastic. That was before Sting disappeared up his own a*rse. When we said make out you are no stranger to the Police as it might scare off Onions Tyson this is not what we meant.

I saw DeMob support the Leyton Buzzards (just before they mutated into Modern Romance) at the Witcombe Lodge just on the outskirts of Gloucester in 1979 or 80. To say that DeMob's boisterous fans were less than impressed with the Buzzards' foray into tango based pop would be an understatement. DeMob won.
There were scenes reminiscent of the Blackfriars End when Cardiff used to visit.
DeMob are (sort of) still going. The Leyton Buzzards/Modern Romance were last seen scuttling off down the A46

Speaking of kick ass gigs, in the early 80's - not sure when exactly, they were hazy days - I went to the Radio 1 Roadshow in the Salt Lake Car Park in Porthcawl. They were crazy forerunners to the rave scene. A lot of the people fronting these gigs are now banged up which gives you some idea of how out of control these things got.

Were they a skinhead band? Not really, IIRC

(No never sparred). He was doing this thing where he held these f*cking heavy dumb bells and his trainer was making him do as many punches in a minute while holding them as he could. And when they'd finished I asked his trainer if I could have a go at what Tyson was doing. Same weights, just hoped to last out the minute, could never hope to throw as many punches as Mike Tyson. I lasted about 13 seconds and nearly blacked out. Tyson still did a photo with me afterwards. Probably out of sympathy. Then he went up to Scotland and smacked Julius Francis in a few minutes.

I was there for the Undertones. Off the top of my head saw Frankie Miller, the Undertones, the Fall, Stiff Little Fingers (twice), Elvis Costello,Radio Stars, the Jam, Otway and Barrett there. My long suffering Dad used to drive me over from Ross, drop me off, then go for an Indian, until I passed my driving test in 1980. Now my son picks me up from gigs-usually in his dressing gown and slippers. He's old before his time.
Lift from my mum/dad, lift home from girlfriends mother, or anyone heading west. Saw the 'Tones, the Jam twice, Stiff twice.
Also saw the Pretenders at the Tech College (anyone else see Retreat from Moscow at that venue?), and the magnificent Smiths at Gloucester Leisure Centre.
Classic piece of thread hijacking btw, Spud-head to Morrissey in five pages, like it.

(Hard to believe but it depends what you like)

Yes I remember that gig - Chrissie Hynd didn't appreciate her "Herefordshire" welcome if I recall!!!

Was there anyone at The Undertones gig who doesn't now post on this forum! I was there and also at The Jam gig. I remember the scrapping during the Undertones concert. Major ruck.

No. The Undertones were fantastic (a few years later I saw the brilliant That Petrol Emotion who comprised the O'Neil brothers IIRC). It was the Jam's last tour I think-they were very poor and the cracks in the band were clear to see.
I saw SLF on the Rough Trade tour-utterly brilliant. They came back a year or so later and I thought they were poor. Saw them again a couple of years ago and didn't change that view. I'm told that Jake Burns is a bit of a Keyte.
Sadly missed the Joy Division gig at MWG, but I was lucky enough to see them a couple of times in Bristol. I regularly go and see Peter Hook and the Light. (He's in Gloucester next Friday). If you like Joy Division/New Order it's a must see. Currently doing the Low Life /Brotherhood albums, but does a short JD set as support.

I also saw Penetration at Malvern, but don't remember the Undertones supporting. Did see the Undertones in their own right as the headliners.
Edit-it was the other way round. Undertones headlined, Penetration were the support. The link I posted earlier suggests that they stood in for the Rezillos who'd recently split.
also have a memory of seeing Spizz play there (not sure when, but think it was as Spizz Energi)

Then we'd better request The Undertones on Saturday. "Jump Boys" ? Come on Onions Tyson, bet you secretly like them too!

How come everyone went to the Undertones gig and no one went to the Thin Lizzy gig? Because I was away at school in Colwyn Bay because they were old farts and punk had exploded Grandad

It's coming back to me now (or it may just be the glass of wine) but I have this funny feeling it was as the support act that they totally blew me away and then they were great as the headline later but the first was the best? Who says Hereford fans are stuck in the 70s?
