Fair play, Elton can still do it.

Elton can certainly still draw a crowd.
He's also savvy enough to adjust the vocals/harmonies on songs where he's no longer capable of hitting certain notes. The lyrics are just a series of noises, though.
He mentioned (co-)writing Philadelphia Freedom in 1976. It was released in 1975.

The Elton John stand at Watford is a right monstrosity. A horrible cheap thing.

Got bored. Sorry, Elton. Switched over to QotSA. Two songs in and the drummer embarks on a solo.
Going to bed.

Didn't even switch it on. Probably helps that my TV has broken. Another victim of Glastonbury, evidently. It never really got over Friday.
Anyway, I was just wondering when they're going to ban smoking at festivals.

Reg (and Bernie) churned out a lot of catchy tunes. And a handful of genuine bangers. Fair play to the old fella.
Chrissie Hynde, still got it btw, without Chambers but hey, acknowledged the other Hereford boys. Gone but not forgotten.

I think something major has to happen with popular music. Glastonbury also has to reset itself to promote new music rather than providing wall to wall 'legends' slots.
Mind you, looking at the headliners from the past, it's probably just been a bit plain old shit for years!:
1971 – David Bowie
1978 – No headliner
1979 – Tim Blake and Peter Gabriel
1981 – Ginger Baker, Hawkwind, and Taj Mahal
1982 – Van Morrison, Jackson Browne
1983 – Curtis Mayfield, UB40
1984 – Weather Report, Black Uhuru and The Smiths
1985 – Echo & The Bunnymen, Joe Cocker and The Boomtown Rats
1986 – The Psychedelic Furs, Level 42, and The Cure
1987 – The Communards, Elvis Costello and Van Morrison
1989 – Suzanne Vega, Elvis Costello and Van Morrison
1990 – The Cure, Happy Mondays and Sinead O’Connor
1992 – Carter USM, Youssou N’Dour and Shakespeare’s Sister
1993 – The Black Crowes, Christy Moore and Lenny Kravitz
1994 – Levellers, Peter Gabriel and Elvis Costello
1995 – Pulp, Oasis, and The Cure
1997 – Ash, The Prodigy, and Radiohead
1998 – Primal Scream, Pulp and Blur
1999 – Skunk Anansie, REM, and Manic Street Preachers
2000 – Travis, The Chemical Brothers and David Bowie
2002 – Rod Stewart, Stereophonics and Coldplay
2003 – Moby, REM, and Radiohead
2004 – Muse, Oasis, and Sir Paul McCartney
2005 – Basement Jaxx, The White Stripes, and Coldplay
2006 – Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and The Who
2008 – Kings of Leon, The Verve and Jay Z
2009 – Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Blur
2010 – Muse, Stevie Wonder and Gorillaz
2011 – Coldplay, U2 and Beyonce
2013 – Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys and The Rolling Stones
2014 – Arcade Fire, Kasabian and Metallica
2015 – Kanye West, Florence & The Machine, and The Who
2016 – Muse, Coldplay and Adele
2017 – Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran
2019 – Stormzy, The Killers and The Cure
2020 – Kendrick Lamar, Sir Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift - Don't think this happened
2022 – Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Sir Paul McCartney
2023 – Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’ Roses, and Sir Elton John

I think the biggest problem with Glastonbury is the lack of diversity with the type of acts. Whilst you are all bopping away in your living rooms to stale old rock and pop acts MT is effectively banished to his garden to sit in the den he has fashioned out of 9 fridge freezers and a car bonnet for a roof.
Where he has to make do with sitting drinking cheap cider whilst reading his impressive collection of jazz mags.

Still puts on a show though with a great sound. Whereas many of the upstarts can't hit any of their own notes when on stage.

I thought that final sentence was very rude, as I'd misread the type of mags; after a second look a realised that I'd substituted a different vowel.

Then maybe Google Jazz Mags.

He'd have struggled in the "Name the Year" section on Popmaster with even his own songs. Philadelphia Freedom is supposed to have been written for Billie Jean King, because her tennis team were the Philadelphia Freedoms. I struggle to see the connection in the lyrics.

Given the audience for Glastonbury now seems to match the 8-80s demographic so beloved of Brockhampton back in the day, finding an act to headline is a bit of a ballsache, not least as Sir Reg has probably now played the ultimate headline set. Springsteen possibly. Taylor Swift potentially. (God forbid that Oasis see an opportunity here)

I think the problem may well be that there aren't many current popular festival-type bands who could headline these days and still make it seem like it's worth the money.
To me, Glastonbury should be being headlined by 20/30 year olds who are popular. I'd also like them to be able to play something interesting, but I guess that's my problem not theirs.
Having 50/60 year olds headlining forevermore isn't going to work. Even the Arctic Monkeys aren't particularly fresh.
Dunno. Perhaps it has always been like it but personally I'd celebrate seeing a new band as shit as Travis headlining. Someone just stick some kids on as headliners!
Edit: I notice that these was a perfect opportunity there to ask why someone won't think of the children.

You can. But if you are an imbecile you will probably get them in the wrong order.
You have got to admire the ambition though.
