Continuing my selfless investigation of these establishments, the Black Swan at Much Dewchurch is best from every point of view. Slater's Queen Bee and Timothy Taylor Landlord excellent. Fine home made food.
An interesting melange of local characters, admittedly somewhat in awe of myself, but including a simple pair of fellows well into their fifth day of a game of pool.
10/10.

Did they piss on your shoes? One knows when one's arrived when a simple pair of fellows pisses on one's shoes. I piss on my own shoes - I find it cathartic. In a way.

Thank you Mr wrong I must assure you though that that we are not in awe of you, but appreciate your observations and humour - especially the pool individuals. It’s a select section of society that do !!

"A simple pair of fellows" A total lack of ambition in life, or at least modest, achievable targets are without doubt the key to happiness. The interminable game of pool provides the focus for the day.
Sounds ok to me.

Any planned visit for coastal walking north Cornwall or Devon should include hospitality at The Old Smithy Inn in Welcome..The thatched hostelry has a sélection of fine ales from the Forge brewery just 3 miles distant and very near the source of the Tamar.A pint or two of Lighthouse or Reverend Hawker ale will probably require a visit to the rather rustic country style facility so gortex footwear advantageous.A decent menu and specials board all prepared from local sources including fresh fish should you wish to dine.No pool table,it’s for the yoof, only chess ,Uno and Backgammon.

The fellows, of course would of referred to said hostelry as the Dirty Duck. Your recent absence has been noted from the best cask ale purveyor within the City too. Indeed they would have.

I am reminded of my favourite line in one of my favourite films. Uttered by a denizen of the Mother Black Cap.... ‘Ponce!’

I suppose the Sisyphean allegory would be pissing against the wind these days.

England's Gate is a very faux establishment peopled by nonentities. Beer served 7/10ths of the way up the glass. Salutation continues to excel. Cross Keys, my local for twelve years, disappoints on the language front. Plough at Little Dewchurch would disappoint any sentient human being. New Harp at Hoarwithy this evening was retailing a very good hoppy guest ale at £3.60 - outside areas had seats with backs. Very much at a premium. 8.5

Excellent choice of beers and ciders (obviously) and very entertaining locals who always appear to be proper blindo. How a country pub should be imo.

Haven't been since that fat old boy with a red face ran it. When I say "old" he was probably about 43 30 years ago. He used to say when you paid for the modest fare on offer "well, what did you' ave?" I will investigate. Not all that far away I did the Tump and the Pilgrim last Sunday. 3/10 and 7/10. Black Swan didn't open for us at 17.03. But to be fair they were closed. If you see what I mean?

Yep. Black Swan a good pub. Owned by my great grandparents on both sides of the family at different times around the turn of the 19/20 century.

Red Lion at Pembridge decent for watching the cricket with a £3 pint of hoppy bitter. New Inn fifty yards away closed at 6.12 pm on the same Sunday. (That's four times it's been closed for no apparent reason at the height of summer.) Secret Garden at Munstone utterly hopeless on the beer front but ok for dogs outside.
Decent Sunday lunch at the Salutation but nothing to write home about. (So anyone from the HT can go there to avoid embarrassment.)
I can wait.....

Consistently good Hobsons Town Crier in the Salutation. Had a trip over on Monday for more after introducing eight lunchers on Sunday for good, if not exceptional fare. This evening couldn't help but notice The Pilgrim's progress has been somewhat tarnished by the outside furniture. Pint of Wye Valley Bitter all right - £3.80. Black Swan as congenial as ever: Slater's, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Hobson's Mandarin - which we were allowed to foretaste - all very good. 8/10. Marked down slightly because no pork pies were available. Warned the person behind the bar about this shortcoming.

Yet. you can eat your KP Nuts that you brought with you from a previous establishment without being asked to leave the building (you could have had a dog with you !) Make your mind up whether it’s Hobsons or Hobson’s ! I look forward to being corrected on my grammatical errors.
