Whilst full back Don Bennett made 392 appearances for Middlesex, whom he later coached, I didn't realise Tony Biggs also played cricket - for Middlesex Seconds. (Peter Isaac played for Herefordians......) Biggs and Isaac are still with us. And so is Bobby Dixon.

February 17th 1973 Fourth Division. Colchester United to kick off. Great adverts surrounding the line up. An eye catcher on another page was a bookies down Commercial Street called Harry Isaacs. The reason I started here was the front cover sported the below photo. From the recent Merthyr Tydfil Welsh Cup encounter. Why did they bother, almost always playing teams containing obscure players? Something not lost on the Hereford faithful. Only 8462 bothered to turn up to see a 0-0 draw. Hereford played Merthyr twice at ES by the looks a second replay the Wednesday before this league match. The managers notes from the Colchester programme. The face in the crowd competition.

That Colchester game best remembered for the thick fog the game was played in. Those in the ME only aware a goal had been scored up BE when players lined up to kick off again. The Merthyr WC win in the reply saw a 3-0 win. Merthyr had given up ground advantage to cash in on the attendances at ES in those days. Nearly 5,200 turned up for the relplay, the draw of course the return of King John.

Some covers from the lesser games including the first Merthyr tie. Going back to the photo in the above post. So much going on there including a packed and brand spanking Len Weston.

Managers notes from the first Merthyr game. Might be a stupid question, but did the Len Weston get called that straight away? The Kiddie friendly and the Pembroke WC match were watched by 3158 and 4100 respectively. We get excited by crowds like that nowadays. Special times.

Yes it was called Len Weston from the off. It was formally opened with a friendly v Villa later in the season (2-2 in front of over 6,000) with the Len Weston Cup up for grabs. I think I am right in thinking the trophy was played for the next season too v West Ham and has never seen the light of day since?

Going back to the photo, the caption says Brian Owen is trying to break past Charles. Google says Charles was over 41 at the time!

Going back to the photo, the caption says Brian Owen is trying to break past Charles. Google says Charles was over 41 at the time! When you're the very best, age is irrelevant, Stanley Mathews being the perfect example, playing top level football into his 50's. I suspect that, unlike King John, Sir Stanley didn't indulge in smoking tobacco. 🤔

Well he certainly gave a decent impression of smoking when advertising them !

I remember an autobiography from that era, can't remember who, but the main takeaway was that they used to have steak with all the bling before the game to make them play like lions. Imagine dragging that around for 90 minutes?

Didn't the rough journey of ciggies go like this?
They were considered good for coughs. They then in barely legible font 4 at the bottom of the packet "actually they may not be all that?". This was counteracted by an explosion in advertising aided by technology as telly grew and sports such as snooker, cricket and motorsport were on every channel. Then advertising was banned, horrific images/anti smoking campaigns grew. Now in most situations if you want to spark up a fag it is like you are breaking out a crack pipe.
It will be good for the current/future young uns although vapes are causing mayhem instead.

I remember as a kid in the 70s going to Pontins in Brean which were great holidays for a kid oblivious to it taking place in a borderline prison camp.
They used to have two houses. Embassy and Castello. I am guessing odd v even chalets? All the competitions would build to a winning team on the last night. A big deal on the last night where you would just be able to make out the stage through a fog not dissimilar to the above Colchester match.
I have a hazy memory that they had a baby crying board. Which I think was a group of spotty kids walking round the chalets to listen out for wailing babbies. They would then alert the pissed up parents back at the ballroom so one of them could go back and sort it. Class if my memory is correct.
Saw the likes of Ray Reardon and Big Daddy there.

Getting to the business end of the first league season. Anyone know why two different versions of the Newport Programme? A re-run due to demand? That game must have been bonkers, must have been our largest ever league crowd at the time or maybe ever (did a Wolves game beat it a few years later?). Crewe was the last game of the season. 14849 and 12616 respectively. 2-0 & 1-0 wins, both nil nil at HT. Some young uns on display in the Newport Programme.
