The point was made that we lived in a secure and safe country, and as such we do. But as a country we did not desert it when things got bad, we fought, not just wars, the right for women to vote, equal rights etc... These people should be asking to be helped to put their country back together, not deserting it. Thatcher had nothing to do with it, but Blair did. Sometimes I think that religion is the route to all evils. Ridiculous comment. Rule Brittania and all that shite. 1. We are a rich nation and the wealth was largely made by completely ravaging other places and peoples. 2. If it wasn't for the English Channel we would have capitulated pretty sharpish against the might of the German forces. We fought hard and wonderfully well, but when people make us out to be more courageous than other nations (such as the French) it really angers me. 3. Most of these people are fleeing areas (Libya, Syria etc) that we (the west) have helped flood with arms and made plenty of cash from. 4. How is someone in Syria meant to achieve your aim of putting their country back together at this point? How is a 5 year old child meant to develop into a person even capable of this when living in such conditions with no education? I could go on, but we are no better than anyone else. We are all nations made up of human beings with aspirations and dreams. Some of us can ruminate on these dreams. Others can only look to tomorrow and try to survive. Others simply want to reach a place where they can live a life they feel worthwhile. Some want their children to have a better life. Some want their children to survive. Brilliant post

The pictures of kids in distress are always going to tug at emotion-that's how charities work. If they showed a picture of swarthy, hard-faced, gangster type, middle easterners, they wouldn't have the same response. By all means open our doors to genuine cases, but why do you think they are all breaking their necks and risking life and limb to get to us? After trekking through several democracies on the way? I won't bother giving the answer, as we all know why.... Not that many are trying to get to us. Some are. It isn't because we are a soft touch, as the right wing rags would have you believe either. Stop now. You are embarrassing yourself in public

You are embarrassing yourself in public So you think we have an over generous and easy touch with regards to benefits? Our unemployment benefits, for example, are among the lowest in Europe. If you are a multinational company, there are plenty of benefits on offer! I am not saying that there aren't issues, I am not a fan of the EU for example, but I get sick of the people at the bottom being held responsible for probalems created by (usually purposefully) people at the top.

The only people who are embarrassing themselves are those who would prefer to let fellow humans suffer because they were born a long way from London (or Hereford).
If an innocent family were being attacked outside your house, would you not let them in to protect them?

Ok...let's go back to the points you made. We are a wealthy country. The limelight seekers will now come out with gibberish that we have the money, facilities etc to be able to take thousands of immigrants, let's go back a few months.... The limelight seekers will now come out with gibberish that this country is on its knees under Cameron as more people than ever are having to use food banks... Don't you understand it's all bullshit from attention seekers trying to get their name out there! Don't be thinking that the majority of people trying to get into Britain are from Syria, look at facts not what the media try and brainwash into you!

Fighting a war in an organised army for your country, continent and way of life is honourable indeed, but it can hardly be compared with the plight of some of these people. Which guerilla army are they supposed to join? Are you saying they should join terrorist organisations and engage in civil wars against corrupt totalitarian regimes (Eritrea for example), in countries whose borders have typically been arbitarily decided by fading imperial powers? I think both posts are extreme simplifications of complex issues. Organised army?.... Maybe we should treat the immigrants the same way as the Japanese treated our forefathers then nobby, I let that comment go as I thought it was the sound of your weak-ass Bullshit argument letting itself down like a balloon. But now I see you're still going stwrong I wonder if you could explain what the hell you even meant by the post above, how it has any relevance whatsoever to my post or to subject of this thread.

So where the feck were these people over the last 4 years when men, women and children were tortured, raped and murdered.... Hiding in their house until the photographer is outside to catch them doing their good deed! Open your eyes ffs!

I can't see how you can label the idea of helping people who are less fortunate than yourself as merely being "bullshit from attention seekers trying to get their name out there". Empathy: bullshit from attention seekers trying to get their name out there.

I don't take it as confrontational, more of a person who cares, as do I. I've seen legs cut off so they can beg and get more money than the one with both legs...I won't go on. Many are completely missing the point, the clamoring now is 99% due to that picture, where were they when the deaths were at their highest 2 years ago in Syria, we didn't see petitions then, we didn't see people shouting for action then...if we had then many who are now not breathing still would be. Maybe I need to log off and chill as all these martyrs who appear now anger me as when they should have appeared they had the blinkers on.

I see what you mean about the photo seeming to wake a few people up to the reality of the situation. Showing what a horrendously desperate state of mind that some people are in. Surely it's a good thing that people have taken the power and meaning of the photo on board? I haven't seen the photo, so I can't really comment on how it might have effected people.

nobby is too outraged that the general public don't respond en masse to situations that they don't understand or even know about, but have the temerity to change their minds when it becomes something evident & closer to home. that level of hypocrisy is enough that nobby thinks they should cancel their donations and go home, instead sending a letter, written: "Sorry for being such an idiot 3 years ago when it really mattered. I'm sure you'll understand that in the light of this, my planned action towards helping you is cancelled, as it could be considered vulgar."

I've not said anywhere it's a bad thing, my posts are all about the holier than holy ones who now choose to act when if they had looked previously they would have seen the 1000's of children losing their lives, people want to give refugees a better life (not a bad thing) but what they should have been doing is actions to give Syrians an actual life. Britain and the rest of Europe have stood back and closed their eyes to war crimes, yet now they try and make themselves out as the saviours

If a family of migrants knocked on your door and demanded to be able to help themselves to your possessions would you let them in?

If they were refugees I would certainly speak to them about their situation. I'm not particularly materialistic, so I might end up giving them an old HiFi, a few mugs and a 2015 Iron Maiden Calendar, but then I suppose they'd just be happy for me to let them sit there without being attacked.
