You'd better tell the (excellent) landlord of the Orange Tree who has 12 (twelve) real ales on tap. None of them Wye Valley Rubbish. He uses the term......wait for it.... "barrel." Just like every other practising landlord. Or indeed landlady. (As opposed to ex ones....) There's going to be a few disappointed punters going into the Orange Tree to have a pint of each of those 12 real ales on tap. They'll get to numbers 11 and 12 and find that they are real ciders, which is quite a shock to the tastebuds.* You're quite right, the BFG is a cracking pint, my favourite of the Black Country Ales on offer. The Pig on the Wall is a strange one, a dark mild which is quite bitter, but I do like it; I think you need to drink it, and only it, in a session to appreciate it. * - Or so I've been told Snakebite anyone?

They always allow you to have a sample before launching into a pint. I agree they're not all great and they do stock at least two dark milds. One of them is (Black Country Ales) Pig on the Wall which is extremely popular; they do at least six barrels of that every weekend. It's not for me; I prefer the bitters or golden ones - of which I would say there are always 2 or 3 very decent ones. BFG is the one for me and, I understand, many others. It's some pint of beer. All in my opinion, of course. Just out of interest, other than just playing the game on here, why all the theatricals with the Wye Valley kit? Not theatricals at all. Too many establishments take the easy way out with Wye Valley Beers. I drank it for about 12 years before I decided I didn't like it when I found better stuff elsewhere. There is so much of it about that lots of local beer drinkers don't get to find too much else. Butty Bach is stronger than the advertised 4.5% and far too variable; very often too sweet. Bitter and HPA are wishy-washy. Hopfather is the best of a bad lot. I genuinely detest the bloody stuff.

I think Wye Valley, like so many microbreweries before it, has become a victim of its own success; with the modern brewery and increased production, whilst the process produces uniform quality, it has lost what made it successful in the first place. I certainly agree with you about Butty Bach, far too sweet and much overrated; to me, the Bitter and Hopfather are still an enjoyable pint, and the HPA is acceptable in establishments where the choice is limited, especially if that choice is Greene King IPA. A lot of it is down to personal taste. Or lack of taste; how else can you explain people drinking British produced lager, Smooth flow beers, or Cider that is not made from apples?

That is why I always look out for Fosters.

I've not tried it myself, but can anybody tell me why Wye Valley have produced this freezing cold Guinness style stout, Nightjar, when they already have the excellent Wholesome Stout?

That is always disheartening. When you see a seemingly withit looking lad walking down the road with a case of really crap beer under his arm.
They aren't even that cheap.

Or worst still if you are in a boozer in London. You are getting turned over anyway, so why not go the extra 70p and get something nice.

Although as a student I found this dodgy cider called Graphite. £1.59 a bottle for 1.5L. 8%. Made you do that spine shiver dance with every sip. Like them drinking whisky in cowboy films.

I enjoy drinking crap lager, good lager and good ale.
That's the major positive about lager. Even the crap stuff is drinkable.

That's a fair point about the lager, which we have to do when we visit several establishments for skittles. You won't find a decent pint of beer in any club in Hereford. Anywhere.

I suppose the first beer I drank regularly, was Marston’s bitter which was drunk to excess by the denizens of The Sun at Winforton. My parents were landlord & landlady, and I was 16 when we took it over in 1973. Bitter 10p Mild 9p Bottle of Pedigree 8p Guinness 12p Shorts 12p Great times for a young lad…

Funnily enough, call it coincidence maybe, but I was introduced to this Stout just last t night in The Barrels, by way of a half pint taster. Blimey, it was lovely, it had Coffee, Chocolate, (not sweet) somehow herby notes, served at room temperature. I'm not a massive fan of Stout, but by God, this is delicious. Well done WVB.

Tetley used to be everywhere when at college up north. Can't remember really seeing it since.
It used to be alright.

That's not exactly how it went, is it? I don't remember everything clearly from last night, but I do remember that you necked it in one and then mineswept the remaining drinks those people had left on the table as they left. A babycham, half a hopfather, a coffee, a hot chocolate and the celery stalk from a bloody mary. That's where those taste notes came from. That's no way for the designated driver to behave.

I was going to post that Betty Stooges is no longer produced as Skinner's brewery went bust but a quick search reveals its been revived. www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2023-03-18/new-owner-of-much-loved-skinners-brewery-revealed
