I once had a piss with Tommy Hughes at Edgar Street. Hereford's second best ever goalkeeper...after David Icke...I know but it's true...

I used to live up the road from Ollie Kearns in Banbury in the 70s (not sure if just living up the road counts here, but oh well). Saw him play for the Puritans many times in my youth. His brother (I think) played for the ROI a few times due to his ancestry - that is, before enjoying a pint of Guinness and the odd potato here and there meant you were Irish. Hi MT, Ollie's big bruvver Mick was indeed a Keeper (dozen caps ROI, GK coach at Walsall, etc) still lives in Banbury. My mother in law lives there and goes to the same RC Church as Mick's wife, both are serious oldschool "good Catholics" !. Thro them I met Mick at a New Years party abt 7? years back, at the time I had forgotten Mick was an ex player and that the Legendary Ollie was an ex Banbury player so possibull relation, until we started chatting about sport and Hereford & then Ollie's name came up. Mick's done well for himself as a property landlord, he told me a few hair-raising stories abt his "firm" approach to bad tenants, his wife seemed very pleased Mick retired to leave this side of the business to the younger ones, she's the social/fundraising organisier for the church, she and Mick both enjoy Guinness etc as you say !. Ollie still lives in North Oxfordshire and helped fund Mick's businesses locally. I very much enjoyed his time with us, but did you know Ollie has the dubious honour of being the scorer of the first-ever goal by Rushden & Diamonds FC, boo.. www.checkcompany.co.uk/director/269868/MR-OLIVER-ANTHONY-KEARNS

I grew up three houses down from Charlie Thompson, he gave me and my brothers an old football one day, a proper old fashioned one with the stitching, if you headed it in the wrong place it left you with a cut forehead. We thought it was a bit naff so we trashed it a bit and left it out in the garden in the rain. It turned out it was a hat-trick ball Charlie had earned playing for United back in the day, sorry Charlie we didn't realise.

I was once chatting to Marc Pugh in the New Chop Suey Bar, Whitecross whilst we were waiting for our respective Chinese orders! Now, just a few years on, he is playing in the Premier League and scoring for Bournemouth! Crazy!

Eric Redrobe was a regular with us in the bar at HRFC, when it was at Rockfield Road. He preferred drinking with us because of the "lack of respect that we gave him, as opposed to the obsequious attitude of many in the other local hostelries".*
Apparently, he'd been a pretty good eggchaser himself, in the 13 man code.
He then introduced a certain D. McNeil to take his place off the bench on the barstool, when he moved on.
Those 2 guys had huge thirsts.
*Those are my words, not his. His were more forthright and Northern.

What were Eric and Dixie like? Didn't Redrobe go back to egg-chasing again later?

What were Eric and Dixie like? Didn't Redrobe go back to egg-chasing again later? They were just normal blokes, using the club as a place to socialise without being constantly approached by supporters wanting to talk football. I'm not sure if Dixie used the club as much as Eric had, as I left Hereford about halfway through his first season.
Both liked a pint or 2, and both were fond of the Hostel on a Saturday night.
No idea if Eric returned to egg-chasing.

Looks a bit like Eric, that lad with the pint! Not surprised Redrobe sought refuge. In 1972-73 the football mania in Hereford was unbelievable, wasn't it? And Redrobe was a bit of an anti-hero. I'll never forget his toothless grin saluting the Meadow End after yet another goal. Could never have had a pint with him back then, sadly,I was only ten or eleven. I'm envious!
