This one brings back a few memories from my years before the mast (starts swinging the lamp). Obviously, there was no TV reception onboard*, so your entertainment during your off-watch periods was reading, ripping the p!ss out of each other, or, if your mess was lucky and had somebody who played a musical instrument, a good old sing-song. We had Smudger in one mess that I was a member of who was a very good guitar and banjo player; I was pretty good on the triangle.**
This was one of our mess's favourites
* - Dreadful, that voyage between Pompey and IOW.
** - Actually, I was part of the rhythm section, as the triangle I played was the Bass Charrington logo on the side of the beer can that I was drinking from.
