It just looks quite tidy. I think building several trillion houses between it and the motorway hasn't done it any harm. The geology that those houses are all built on is some of the worst in the UK. Is that right? Why is that, seriously? I like learning about this sort of thing.

Either side of the Severn Estuary between Avonmouth and Bridgewater on the English side (including Highbridge/WSM) and between Caldicot and pretty much Cardiff Bay is awful ground.
Basically all the flat bits. It has just been fed sludge by the Severn Estuary. You get a little crust of decent ground, a couple of metres or so, then you get 7-15 metres of very soft clay/silt, then you finally hit dense gravels.
All the buildings will be on piled foundations. Hard to put drainage and tanks etc. In the ground.
All the major estuaries have poor ground along their mouths. Humber/Thames etc.

A bloke from work went there when Banksy had turned it in to Dismaland or whatever it is called. He said it was brilliant, they needed the toilet and asked a member of staff who just shrugged his shoulders and gave it all the "not bovved". It is something quite smart now - fairground or something. Looked quite smart though.

They both have very well managed waterway systems so don't tend to flood. The Welsh side is called Caldicot and Wentloog Levels Something, and the English side is Sedgemoor and Something, Something. Anyway they make sure it all works well. I think.

Geology is nuts. That is all very recent stuff, but has still been there forever. Then you learn things like that places in the Peak District were once in the sea.
It is like when people start talking about space and it makes your brain hurt.

I once found a trilobite in Dudley. No wonder he was dead. Miles from civilisation.

I've been waiting my whole BB life for a thread with stuff about Geology. I really knew lots about it at one time and lost lots of friends by going on like a cracked record about coal and stuff. I still think I'm an expert when in truth I've started to forget vital links and get things all mixed up.
However if there's anything geological you'd like to know I'm always up for a confused monologue.
Fossils was my favourite bit at one time.
Oh - and coal.

Back on thread - Darlington reminded me of Scott's famous last diary entries which included such gems as 'My God - this is an awful place' and 'Look after our people'.
Went to the old stadium just the once with a mini bus load of students. All I can remember is rusty corrugated iron and nettles. It was really foggy. We thought the final score was 0-0 but it turned out next day that it was 1-1. We failed to see either goal and there were so few in that we didn't hear any cheering either.
Scarred me for life.

I only seem to know about the coastal stuff, picked it up watching Howard's Way.

They seem to be investing all the cash you splashed in the arcade on loads of half decent stuff. Hmm. Arcades aren't cheap these days. I was in Devon last week and someone found me an arcade to play in - I was staggered by the cost. Penny Falls are now 10p Falls - I got through £3.75 in seconds, with no return. I spent £2 in one attempt at shooting cowboys; the game lasted less then 30 seconds because I kept shooting the cowboy's wife, in spite of her protestations. The toys available in those grabber thingies are sh!te. It's 50p a go, or 3 goes for £1, but the machines don't accept pound coins. And who wants a cuddly fckn flamingo anyway? Flamingos aren't cuddly - gangly and awkwardly pink yes, but never cuddly. I remember the days when you couldn't win a packet of Embassy or a pound note wrapped around a (hopefully) spent round for 5p; a far better waste of money. The driving games are also sh!te. I kept crashing and the noise made me jump. That doesn't sound too bad. After he'd made a dog's dinner of replacing my roof, it cost me 10 years.
