Very sad to hear Brian Close has passed away. I suspect his liver will now have to be beaten to death with a stick. An absolute legend with a fierce temper, but fearless, he let the ball hit him rather than back away. I remember he played golf at Mendip and was having such a bad round he threw his clubs in a lake and said he was giving up the stupid game and stormed off (I cleaned that up a lot). Twenty minutes later he was wading in the lake. Colin Dredge asked him if he had changed his mind about golf. "No my f****** car keys are in the bag."

Had him as guest speaker at company dinner some years ago.Drank double scotch all evening and stone cold sober.Had hands like shovels, felt like shaking hands with a vice.He spoke about the India and West Indies tours and cricket in general for an hour with great wit and frankness.Wanted his fee in cash and went in the gents to count it once paid.Played football with the Arsenal as well if I remember correctly.Great character, built like a battleship and hard with it.
