I think Llandovery were even better than Brecon from memory,(by reputation, because we didn't get to play them) so you must have been quite a player! I stopped trying to play in the forwards when I was eleven!

A reprieve for Sir James Hook? When I said that all rugby fans want to see the best players in action, perhaps I should have qualified it by saying that I was happy to see Sir James turning out for Glos during the RWC.
If Gats calls up James (it beggars belief that he left him out in the first place), with Billy Burns' injury (not sure how serious that is) it would certainly be an early step up for young Mat Protheroe. He is an exciting prospect!!! Maybe use 36 at fly half as well.
Sad news also for Rhys Webb, another hugely talented Welsh player who could have set this world cup alight.
PS. Sorry to all those who are exclusively football fans for this post
I'd be very surprised if Protheroe were to be thrown in at the deep end. As you say, I'd imagine Twelvetrees would slot in at 10. We have a few options to fill in at 12.

Looks like Hook will be missing out, so good news for those of us at Castle Grim (although not such good news for Hook). None of the Gloucester boys needed by Wales, so hopefully will be unleashing all three against B*th on Sunday.
Protheroe is a fantastic prospect-signed on a First team contract at 18. Saracens were also very keen, as were one or two of the Welsh clubs

While we're on the subject - Matt Kvesic, how on earth he's not in the England 31 is beyond me! (Such a shame the skipper plays 7!)

Don't get me started on that one. Without any question the best English no 7 in the Prem. His time will come (I would guess that Robshaw may well be playing his last WC), but Kvesic should be in the 31.

England haven't fielded a true 7 since Neil Back, despite the fact we currently have the best 7 in European rugby in Steffon Armitage. Certainly agree that Kvesic was unlucky to lose out though.

As Colebridgeball says, don't get me started on the Kvesic situation. Agree with the previous posts about England's No. 7 position.
I'm having nightmares already about Hooper and Pocock at the breakdown, and, at some point on the Saturday before, Warburton and Tipuric in tandem.

Not that Gloucester fans are one eyed or anything....
FWIW I entirely agreed with the decision not to include 36 (although taking Burgess as a 12 sticks in the craw a bit).

Llandovery? That brings back a few memories. I went to a school in North Wales called Rydal-very much a rugby school. Used to play in the Llandovery 7s IIRC. Also played Belmont regularly. Those games always had a bit of an edge for some reason.

Belmont Abbey games had an edge because it was a Catholic, all boys, boarding school, with not even Nuns to provide female company, only Monks (I don't mean the Monks provided the female company). The Rugby field was the only place to release the testosterone.
I played in the same county side as John Doubleday, the ex Briz prop, who was nearly capped for England. I say nearly because he was on the bench for a number of games, but nobody was injured. I also played against him, and he did have edge. Lovely fella off the field, though, gentle giant.

I'm not Twelvetree's biggest fan to be honest. He certainly didn't look like an England international for much of last season. I can see why they've taken Burgess. I think he'll be used as an impact sub in the same way that Ben Morgan often is. His hard running and crunching tackling will certainly ruffle a few feathers in the final quarter of games.

We played Belmont Abbey, 1980 I think it was, (might have been 1979). We turned up there and my God did they fancy themselves. They had two or three lads trot out in their purple England schoolboy tracksuits, do you remember those? We beat them - but not by much. We really started to believe in ourselves after that. Tell you what, schoolboy rugby First XV was fantastic for team spirit, really was. And Paul Thorburn became such a good player partly because he played in a totally sh*t Hereford Cathedral school team. It was one player against our fifteen. And not even Thorburn could win that one.
