A few points, I think people need to realise just what a phenomenal achievement it is to win both the 5k and 10k 3 times (twice at the Worlds and once at the Worlds) against the very best. It is simply incredible.
Also, portraying Track and Field as a minority sport is not accurate, in my opinion. It is, after football, the most widespread sport of them all, with all nations represented and most pretty well. It is certainly a bigger international sport than Cricket or Rugby, which are very much minority sports in comparison.
Thirdly, saying that running isn't a sport is ridiculous too, especially at these distances where tactics and mind games are a huge part of it.

In which case the most successful angler should be right up there with a shout.

Agreed Glos.
If that's the case then Phil 'The Power' would be going toe to toe with Mo!

I'd say he's up there with the greatest British track and field athletes but wouldn't win that as a category (yet). To then bring in every other sport in the world pushes him yet further down.
I'd agree that Steve Regrave is above him and Daley Thompson from the Athletics world and there are probably others that I can't think of at the momment.
Greatness is not defined by the number of titles or awards you win but by HOW LONG you can compete and dominate a sport. Farah has had a fantastic three or four years but that is an extremely extremely small amount of time.

Greatest athlete perhaps although the sport has become as tainted as cycling currently. Best. Botham. Mathews. Strange how the greats become synonymous with one name. with the exception of Sting and Bono I guess?.

There are a few dual internationals but probably none that reached such heights.

Arnold Sidebottom, Steve Gatting and Steve Ogrizovic. Now there's talent. None of them were stellar in one field in the way that Compton was.

For sheer entertainment it has to be Botham.
All time greats to include Redgrave, Pinsent, Daley Thompson, Tony McCoy, George Best, Ronnie Radford.
