We were two playing cards. My dad wasn't even a gambler but quite good at art. We had playing cards front and back like the end is nigh mob, plus a crown. Thinking about it is a double act show of force we would have probably cleaned up, but I am happy to have missed my one shot at a gold medal if it blighted my brother's life. We didn't have a silver jubilee street party in our street so we gate-crashed another street's silver-jubilee street-party. Me and my mate who didn't live in our street, nor the silver-jubilee street party throwing street, managed to get a game with one of the teams competing in a 6-a-side footy (sorry 'bout that) competition, presumably because they only had 4 in their team or perhaps because 2 of their 6 were really sh!t. Anyway, we won the competition and after we'd eaten some of the street-party's food, snuck off home to our respective non-silver jubilee street-party throwing streets each having been awarded a 50p Woolworth voucher. I spent mine on a cricket ball, one of those really hard practice balls which were essentially cricket-ball-sized spheres of concrete painted red which you should avoid heading.

What was your record for header keepie ups with your cricket ball? Scabbing games of football round other people's streets. Very Coventry City.

If I was on my own with the ball - 1; if the estate's bigger boys were in charge of the ball, as many as they wanted me to do until they got bored.

I'll be giving the Royal show a swerve this evening but I have to admit I've found some of the media coverage quite compulsive reading today. According to the BBC, "The Duke of Sussex has said racism from the tabloid press that filtered into the rest of society was a "large part" of why he and his wife left the UK". Then someone pointed me in the direction of this article from 2009: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/prince-harry-called-fellow-soldier-his-little-paki-friend-1299804.htmlAt least there is now one less racist in the country! Hopefully the taxpayers contributions to the Royals have been reduced accordingly. Still plenty of them left who need to be removed from the payroll though!

The PM v Press 4 o'clock kick off was quite good today. The home team battered the non-news pointless questions from the visitors aside with the contempt they deserved.

An odious bunch of over privileged spongers .... completely past their usefulness date ...... I’d get rid of the lot ! I’d also get rid of the House of Lords !

All proof, if it were even needed, that the royal family and the tabloid press have had an 'understanding' for decades. The racist sleaze rags will go easy on, or even ignore, certain things, in return for multiple photo-ops, and the occasional body to loudly crucify, and it works for them on two levels - in this country, more fool us, it shifts copies, and also serves to allow them to ignore real news, usually of the complete FUBAR the government is making of handling a pandemic, while actually increasing the gap between the haves and the have nots.
That Harry and Meghan have actually said, out loud, that the family are 'terrified of the press' has really pi55ed them off - they'll be going at them for ever and a day.

Its lucky for Harry and Meghan that they love the press writing about them all the time etc. Imagine, if all they really desired was privacy in a quiet area, away from anywhere, with their chickens, with just the scenery to occupy their days.

Strikes me this is all about Harry and Meghan controlling the narrative and MSN going all Fruity Metcalfe about it as that’s what they do.
Build them up, knock them down, and heaven help those who upset the apple cart.
edit-what Barney said. There are elements of the National press that are utterly toxic

I'm still meh about the royal family! I think I prefer them as HOS material rather than American style president; definitely prefer tham to a Russia, Belarus or People's Republic of China stye President.
Harry fled to America to get away from racism; Yanks haven't seen the irony.

Quite so Eggchaser. Also, the cost of having them is actually quite cheap. Way back when the Crown had more real power the financially incontinent King George ran out of money and Parliament had to bail him out. The price was to concede all the revenues from the Royal Estates to the Exchequer and since then, all the revenue comes to Government. Now known as The Crown Estate, it’s income is worth way more than the cost of maintaining the Royal Family. The Royals actually only own Sandringham and Balmoral, the rest belongs to us through the Historical Royal Palaces.

I don't really care about the cost, it's fundamentally unjust to perpetuate a system in which people are born into privilege and wealth. It's an anachronism in modern society and needs to go. As for Harry and Meghan, I hope that they are as good as their word and now retreat into the private world they so crave. Somehow I doubt it.

Corrected for you. Good to see also that much of that war chest has also had to be diverted toward the chosen charity of H and M.

It's ok, I realise you're going to struggle with this issue. They have gone to live in the USA. You really couldn't make it up.

But she's an American wain, so why not? I doubt that there is a country on this planet that doesn't have, to some extent at least, an unpleasant underbelly of intolerance, (maybe NZ is an exception), but she, and he, to a lesser extent, has been hounded and hated in the UK, and is adored, especially now, by most of the US. I don't really have a dog in this particular fight, but what would you have done?

An interesting position Som. in our modern society of which you speak, thousands are born into privilege and wealth. Some of them into families who have created that wealth others who have inherited it. How would you stop that happening? By appropriation? That’s hardly just in a modern and free society. Wealth and privilege is also relative; the Royal Family are undoubtedly rich and privileged, but have none of the freedoms you or I take for granted, like being able to express an opinion or go where we want when we want without hindrance is really available to them. Would you put your family through the nonsense they have to put up with? I wouldn’t and if the Saxe Coburg Gotha family are happy to do it in return for a a fraction of the income we as a country get from the Crown Estate then they are welcome to it. I’d rather have that soap opera as HoS than a superannuated politician. agree totally on the Harry and Meghan thing, they should now just live a life away from the public. They won’t though, because they both crave the association to the Royal Family. Without it he’s just another nice but dim Ex Guards officer who would otherwise be selling ‘nice hices’ to Sloaney couples and she’s a jobbing actress.

You appear to have overlooked The Duchy of Cornwall, valued at over £1bn and owned by Charlie Farlie.
