Announcements at CG this morning about new training facility (next to the Ground) and the installation of an artificial pitch ahead of the 21-22 season. It’s the latter that’s causing the most gnashing of the teeth, although most accept the logic, not least as it enables the ground to host far more matches. It’s only about three years since the much trumpeted and hugely expensive hybrid pitch was put in place.
Proof will be in the pudding I guess. I don’t like artificial pitches, but they’re probably “the future” as the technology improves, and it doesn’t make a great deal of commercial sense to only use the ground on 20-30 occasions as at present to protect the playing surface.

Of right. Why is that?

My old man used to talk about playing against Gloucester for Swansea back in the fifties. Of course the Gloucester pack was always legendary, but my dad would regale me with stories about how the away team would have to avoid the old ladies who came on to the field after the game to hit you with their umbrellas. Sounds apocryphal, but my dad wasn't one for tall tales.
Can't imagine that happening on a plastic pitch.

The stadium is in a part of Gloucester that used to be the Castle Grim estate; it had been church buildings and estate before the name of Castle Grim.

The Lions got thumped today. Shameful day, the day the Lions decided that rugby is not about running with ball in hand but all about playing feckin' Foyleball. For me, for the last 53 years, the most special sporting event that takes place once every 4 years has been the Lions tours to the southern hemisphere. You weren't able to watch the games live until about the 80s, so it was all about getting up at silly o'clock to listen to the commentary on the radio when the games were in NZ (1989 was the first time the Lions toured solely in Australia, it used to be just a quick staging post before going on to NZ), or in the afternoon when in SA. You'd then see recordings of the Saturday games on Wednesday night on Sportsview (which morphed into Sportsnight with Coleman and then just Sportsnight) and midweek games on Grandstand on a Saturday. It was magic! There have been many ways that the Lions have lost the series in the past; Aussie ref Brian Kinsey in NZ 1993/Nathan Grey's elbow in Australia in 2001/Ronan O'Gara tackle SA in 2009, but this is the first time that they've lost because their idea of attacking rugby is to hoist an up and under when they are just outside the opponent's twenty-two. Warren Gatland and Rassie Erasmus, you've completely disillusioned me and, for the first time ever, made me wonder if the Lions tours are worth it.

The Lions got thumped today. Indeed. Thank God for the Olympic Sevens. And God forbid that Gatland ever gets anywhere near a sevens team. Yesterday's game reminded me a little of the World Cup final. You can't 'out-Springbok' the South Africans. Next week we need to offer up something different. And get Adams and Williams in the team.

Actually my summary of the situation was me being maxed out rugby knowledge wise. I watched it from half time. Whoops.

I've always said that Dan Biggar is a much better distributor and playmaker than playing for Gatland has ever shown; just look at the way he gets the Wales backline moving under Wayne Pivac and Northampton's under Chris Boyd. Adams for Van der Merwe (was gobsmacked when he was picked for the tour, never mind the test team) is a must; Gatland must have had a rush of sh!t to the brain when he made this choice for the first test. Williams for Hogg, who can't catch or tackle, is also a no-brainer.

Suspect Hogg will be cited. He was awful in any event, as was Van der Merwe who seemed to be picked for his physicality rather than any great wing ability. Poor old Harris barely saw any decent ball, but should keep his place as he combines physicality with an ability to break the line and off load to the wingers. Just needed some ball.
Could do worse than go with Smith at 10, although he’ll have to have some decent protection. Williams should be at FB with Adams on the wing ahead of VDM. Heart of course would love to see LRZ given a go. But I’ll settle for him coming back in one piece.

Food for thought. Don't agree with it all but something needs to be done. How about letting Pat Lam run international rugby? www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/jonathan-davies-demands-world-rugby-21203265He makes a good point about Biggar and Farrell, though like Eggchaser, I suspect Biggar is playing under orders. And by the same token you could have Gareth Davies on the bench; unlike Murray and Price he's a poor box kicker, but he does offer something different in both attack and defence.

Controlled, non-reckless, rucking (anything on the ground that is not somebody's head is considered to be grass) would be a way to ensure teams commit more players to the ruck, taking all/most of those forwards out of the defensive line. Along with this, players entering a ruck/maul must bind to a member of their own team first, or, if they are the first of their own team, they must bind to a member of the opposition. This would tie in players if you made a law that, once bound in to a ruck/maul, players cannot leave until the ball is out (the same as a scrum). You could say that these are the binds that tie (sorry, couldn't resist). Another way would be for the touch judge to police the offside line. Box kicks/Up and unders could be reduced if players were allowed to mark the ball anywhere on the pitch, and then kick straight to touch from that place, making the box kicking team have to defend a lineout in their own twenty-two. This might allow numbers 10 to 15 to play some rugby.

Here, at Hereford FC, we seem to talk the talk when it comes to being a community club, but don't seem to walk the walk.
I've recently been reading about a rugby club on a run down estate in Catania, Sicily, that is having problems with a local organisation. This organisation is trying to close the club down because, it argues, it is diverting children away from the local enterprise.
The clubhouse was burned down in 2018, and the team bus was set alight earlier this year. However, the club are not deterred and have 150 playing members and runs 8 teams, men and women.
This is a truly incredible community achievement when you realise that the local organisation that is trying to close them down is the Mafia.

Autumn internationals start this weekend, a week before the international window when clubs have to release players to the test teams.
Two games in the UK, Scotland v Tonga and Wales v All Blacks; normally, I would think the Wales game wold be the one to watch, but seeing as they will only have about a third of their first choice players available,* I think the Scotland game is the most interesting.
I hope all those fans who have paid record ticket prices for the Wales game get their money's worth, but, frankly, I doubt that they will #ripoff.
The only interest for me is, because of players' non-availability, the 21 year old Dragon's openside flanker, Taine Basham (great name), will get to go against the All Blacks back row; he is definitely a player for the future.
* Even I had a call to see if I was available, and I'm English; apparently, I qualify through my wife's nationality.

Agree entirely. My interest is in seeing Priestland and Cuthbert getting a game, if only to give an immense f*ck you to all those ignorant fans who drove them out of the Welsh game.

I was looking in to getting tickets for someone off a Welsh fella I used to work with for Wales France or Wales Scotland in the 6 Nations obviously. The request was bottom tier, the ticket prices were £105 or £100. The middle tier are £115. Twickenham tickets must be mental based on that.
The person realised they had a nice big telly when I quoted the prices.
It will probably sell out though I guess.
