From what I've seen, the mass debate* has focused more on the assaults on managers and players as part of this latest trend, which I think, maybe barring a few historical events, is more of a recent phenomenon. Pitch invasions have always happened, sure - but they've tended to be a bit more celebratory, involving players getting kissed, hugged and congratulated (admittedly largely without consent) rather than beaten up. Probably not very pleasant to be molested by your average football supporter on the best of days but what happened to Vieira in the Everton game and Robin Olsen yesterday seems to me to be a new twist. What's the motivation? Everton didn't stay up at Palace's expense, so what is the incentive to get at Vieira? Manchester City had the title wrapped up prior to kick off assuming they didn't drop any points and, as far as I can gather, had no particular axe to grind with Villa or especially Olsen who was making his debut for them - it's a phrase that could apply to Man City in general, but specifically with this fixture - where's the history? Why not celebrate completing your purchase of the title with your players rather than Hancockting one of their opponents? I suppose I'd do as well to psychoanalyse the physician's sponge as the type of supporter who would indulge in this sort of behaviour but it doesn't stop me asking. * Yeah... "....purchase of the title....." Very, very good. 👍
