One of the more memorable big terraces for me was being on the Spion Kop at Blackpool c1980. I went there KNOWING Blackpool was an orrible place even in the summer, and the sandstorms were legendary. My first trip to that fine town for the "Lights" a few years previous we witnessed a riot on the beach outside our hotel twixt home and Leicester? fans (Bloomfield Rd being near the sea), and also enjoyed the gale-driven sand drifting six streets back from the sea. Foolishly forgot all that when agreed to travel a few years later, but hey it was sunny spring and Blackpool is a famous much-loved holiday resort# so all would be well. Needless to say abt 30 of us had the huge terrace to ourselves, like the ruddy Eiger, contrary to the prog cover-photo no roof by then, I think it had been sandblasted away. You could hear fans in the ground but couldn't see them, dotted around a seemingly huge empty stadium and hiding in safe corners from the wind. We lost a poor game.
UPDATE: Just looked it up in the Bible, It was May 82, crowd was 1881, "lowest Bloomfield Road crowd ever since 1896. Play into the teeth of a gale. Real shamble says Lord". Oh the joy of a mispent youth ! # according to the media etc, for our hols we alus went south to Cornwall not north towards Iceland, live and learn eh. I was also there. It was May Bank holiday and we went up on a Gwalia minibus from Ross Vegas (think Maltese was with us). Every type of weather that day, memorable for, without doubt, the most I have EVER drunk during the course of 12 hours or so without being sick. Couldn't say the same for one of our number who turned green in the minibus on the way back down the M6, stuck his head out of the window and was very very sick. A nice surprise for the cars following us. That terrace was enormous. It as a great day out.

My my CB, again I dispair abt you, now the truth is coming out.. I can't recall how I got there, except with the usual FoD suspects no doubt. Ah, Maltese. In more recent times I often wondered if he thought all his Christmases had come at once, when he found himself an official steward at ER, talk abiut the perfect "job" Also recall another lad who was rather more outgoing, or braver, than his slight build suggested was wise. Jason iirc. Is he still about ?.

What happened to 'Spider'? And an extremely full of chemicals/alcohol character from Leominster in the late 80's called Charlie (very aptly!)

I'd like to know who the Hereford lad was who ran all the way to the centre circle to meet Newport's top boy running from their end. Edgar Street was totally packed out, about 14,000 I think, and we won 2-0. Great day. The fight in the centre circle? Think it was a draw, TBF.

Bible re County home game, 7 April 73. Gate 14,849 ", won 2nil Owen, Jenkins. "Bruising match with 3 from each side booked, County manager says "no-one could excuse Hereford of playing like fairies". Looking back to the game at Somerton, which we won with a Redrobe penalty, "bad tempered brawl not aided by ref who loses control. 3 from each side booked but Hereford are good value for win with their magnificient "fighting" attitude."
Think the home game was a tense one as both sides trying to get promoted, and with a little needle on and off the pitch ?
County finished season on 56 pts, missing promotion on GD to Aldershot, shame..

Thanks Archie, that's why it remains in the memory then, I had forgotten the timing of it and the importance of it. A great day.
