I remember when it started, I'd had a transistor radio for my 8th birthday the year before. That enabled me to listen to stations such as AFN and hear all the latest American soul and R&B releases. Once Caroline started, you'd be under your bedding, playing with your tuner*, moving between Luxembourg, Caroline and AFN, whichever had the better signal. A huge improvement on the BBC's feckin Housewives Choice, Family Favourites, Music While You Work, Sing Something Simple and other music programmes turning out your Parents' and Grandparents' music. Caroline was a huge influence in tha Beeb starting Radio 1 in 1967. * - That's not a euphemism (it probably became one when Christine Perfect joined Chicken Shack, couple of years later)

My first real memory of the station was when the original Caroline sailed from the East Coast to the Isle of Man in July 1964. The reception when it sailed near the South Wales coast was excellent. That got me started. And I still listen.
Yesterday morning, for example, they played three hours of the best album tracks ever recorded. Brilliant.

Just caught up with this. www.theguardian.com/culture/2024/jan/15/bowie-mott-the-hoople-all-the-young-dudes-ziggy-stardust"We were a Hereford band called Silence, but just before we were due to go to London to see potential new manager Guy Stevens there was a fight in Hereford. Our singer Stan Tippins went to break it up and someone smacked him in the mouth and broke his jaw. So when we visited Guy, he suggested getting another singer in to replace him and changing the name. "I used to be a tour manager behind the stage - counting the money, talking to the promoter, going through all these things - and suddenly I'd have to be at the side of the stage doing all these harmonies.
"I used to have my own microphone behind this curtain, my own amp and monitor - so I could hear myself and know what I was doing… Everyone else thought it was one of the others." Stan Tippins
